Problem of the month: June 2017

A previously unreleased endgame problem.

DON’T DROP THE BALL!

TURN: WHITE
LEVEL: EASY ENOUGH FOR BEGINNERS

Black has just eject in A5 and the situation is tense: both players are one point short of winning! But you play White and you win in two moves. Be careful, don’t miss the right first move, otherwise your opponent will win the game!

  1. White moves d5-e7; black must move e9. Regardless of where it’s moved, white responds with d6-f8 and black cannot escape.

Does this solution qualify as two moves, or is it three?

    • Never mind, I’m wrong, black can respond with e9-d8 and d8-d6. If white moved d5-f8 instead, black can’t move to d8, but if he moves to f8 I don’t see how to capture him. This is a good one!
